Short Story: City of Gold.

My short story, City of Gold, which is a historical m/m romance set in Byzantium, has been accepted for the Dreamspinner Press anthology, A First Time For Everything. I am delighted to say the least, I have a lot of love for this piece (even if it's taken me a while to find a name for one of the two main characters!) and am currently in the research stages for a sequel which I hope to be of novel length, rather than a nap-size daydream line length. This is my happy face :D.

Now all I need to do in terms of not so fun research is figure out the tax thing. ATO, you are my only hope. /Star Wars. (And deal with blood tests and other tests this week, but those aren't related to writing and I'm trying not to dwell on them overly much.)

I third those congratulations and add that if you're making more than $2000 on the stories in the one financial year, you can divide the omoney over a five year period. Income averaging! I knew the term would come back to me eventually. Don't gorget to deduct costs of writing, like depreciaionon your computer, portions of ISP costs if you had to email the story etc etc.

Thankee! Um, as awesome as that would be, I don't think I'll ever hit that amount. Do you know how I report my income (which I haven't got yet, so it's still academic) when it comes from a US source, not an Australian one?

It's reported as foreign source ncome. That way, if they withhold any tax on the payment, that tax withheld is credited to whatever tax you pay on it here. They probably won't withhold any tax on it, though, as you're unlikkely to earn enough to make ti worth their while.

If they pay by cash, that cheque is then converted to Australian dollars and you declare that amount, remembering to take into account the cost of converting it to AUD (which was $28 the last time I had to do it). Remember, too, that you don't declare anything until you actually cash the cheque, not when they send it, so if you're paid in a foreign currency hold off until our dollar falls through the floor again and you'll be rich! This may take something like a decade to hapen, thoough...

Byzantium is an incredibly rich period in history so there's loads I can use - it's just deciding which bits to use!
