The Future of My Books.

This is an update on my books. I realise that I have not posted for quite a while, unfortunately my time and energy has been filled with other things. As such, I feel that now is a good time to post what is going on with my books, website and myself.

My website:

As has been noted, the www.ljlabarthe.com website is now down. I decided not to renew it when the bill came in and let the site die, because of the situation with my books. I am unsure at this point whether or not it will go back up in the future. At the moment, I feel that my Dreamwidth account will suffice for now.

Less Than Three Press:

It was with great sadness that I was told of the closing of LT3; a feeling shared by many I have no doubt. They were one of the first to publish me, with a little story about an angel and his human lover in their angel anthology. With my rights reverted back to me, I am pondering what to do with them, though I am considering that I will most likely publish the trilogy I was aiming (hoping!) to publish with them. I hope that another publisher will take them on, although I am waiting to get some editing and beta'ing done on books two and three respectively before putting out the feelers on those. At this time, however, all my books with LT3 have been pulled and are no longer for sale.

I will miss working with LT3, they were a great indie publisher, very no-nonsense and very approachable. They were willing to take risks and publish good quality work, to provide excellent editing services and tremendous art. I will always treasure the covers done for me by Aisha, her art always took my breath away and exceeded every expectation and hope I could have. I always felt that this publisher had my back and the backs of all their signed authors and I will miss them.

Dreamspinner Press:

Several weeks ago, I asked for my rights back. I have recieved them. I don't know what I'll do with those books, I am considering self-publishing City of Jade, my historical set on the Silk Road during the time of the Byzantine Empire, and perhaps, if life gets quite a bit less hectic, the Archangel books, but condensing them considerably so that they are three books instead of nine. Beyond that, I think the rest of my books would be best left to retire.

Dreamspinner were also one of the first publishers to sign me, for a Daily Dose collection. I was very blessed to have a wonderful editor in Erika, and the amazing art of both Anne Cain and Reese Dante for the majority of my books. I'm also grateful to Elizabeth for agreeing to let me put together an all Australian anthology, Under the Southern Cross, and to Anne Regan for assisting us in doing it, and Lynn West for editing.

I'm sad it's come to this, but I feel that it's the right outcome for everyone.

The future:

As I do/don't release things, there will of course be updates here, on my Twitter ([profile] brbsiberia), my Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/lj.labarthe.9) and my Instagram ([profile] ljstar239). If you're interested in my daily life of cats, retweets and randomness, please feel free to follow me on Twitter and Instagram; if you have a Dreamwidth account or Livejournal account (I use the same name there), feel free to follow me. Everything from Dreamwidth is copied to my LJ account.

Thank you everyone for the past years of support, reading, feedback and reviews. I wish you all the very best for the future and I hope to see you in bookshelves soon. <3

2015 Rainbow Awards.

Brick by Brick co-authored with Cate Ashwood has won an Honorable Mention in its area of best gay contemporary romance in the 2015 Rainbow Awards. Thank you so much!

The comments for this one are so lovely, again, thank you. "This story is like the most delicious dessert for the brain! How beautifully written it was and what a great romance between these two so likeable men! This is for sure a well deserved ten across the board. Nothing less will do for this beautiful story. It's such a delight when one comes across a story so well written, a story that wraps you up in the softest wool cotton keeping you warm way after 'The End'. More stories like this one need to come out. So, I suggest to these two wonderful Authors to Get Going! I Want More!!!"

And don't worry, we two authors are working on more stuff together. :D

The Archangel Chronicles: Post the Second.

The final book in the Archangel Chronicles will be released on the 2nd. It's available for preorder now on the Dreamspinner site, but it is indeed the last one.

I have been so incredibly lucky to be able to write this seriews and have it find its home with DSP. I began them wanting to write about Archangels and Archdemons and how the two ancient enemies would interact in crisis that were bigger than their animosities. I also wanted to develop romantic relationships within that framework, and the main one is that of Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Theirs is a love that is essentially "friends to lovers." I'm sure many--if not all--of us have had a crush on someone and kept it as quiet as possible for various reasons, and in Michael's case it's purely a lack of self-confidence. He doesn't feel that the dashing, handsome, outgoing Gabriel would have any interest in him at all. He hides it so well, so deep within himself that it's kept buried for centuries. Michael is shy and retiring, keeping himself separate from the rest of the Brotherhood and so it isn't until a meeting of all of the Archangels that Gabriel catches his attention and is drawn to Michael more than ever before. A slow and gentle courtship begins as the two open up more and more to each other, their relationship and their love growing.

Of course, nothing is ever easy and there is always some plotting or misdeeds that interfere with the path of true love.

Now, with nine books in the series, everything is over and with a happy end for everyone--except the bad guys.

I hope everyone has been with these characters since the first book will enjoy the last and I hope that new readers of the series will enjoy it just as much.

Thank you to all my readers, past, present and future; to Elizabeth and DSP for publishing the series; to Cate and Meredith for beta'ing; to Ericka, Lynn, Ian and the editing staff; Anne for the amazing covers. <3 <3 <3

The Archangel Chronicles.

We're near the end, dear friends, the end. The last book of The Archangel Chronicles will be out on the 2nd October, and to celebrate its release and the end of the series, I'm doing a series of posts here to commemorate that. So first up, a playlist. This is music I listened to while I was writing, music that I thought fit the characters or the scenes or the tone of things. It's an eccelctic variety, and I hope you enjoy some--if not all--of it.

Cover Reveal: Brick by Brick, co-authored with Cate Ashwood.

It's coming soon, but first, here is the cover. This is a contemporary m/m romance written by myself and good friend and colleague, Cate Ashwood. The cover art was done for us by Bree Archer. The book is being published by Dreamspinner Press.

Blurb: They say that time heals all wounds, but losing Parley, his one true love, left Zach with a hole in his heart that no one else can fill. After forty-eight blissful hours alone together as teens in an abandoned house, Parley disappeared. Parley is what he is, and the pray-away-the-gay camp his parents ship him to won’t change that. However, finding the balance between accepting his true nature and not losing his family means tough sacrifices.

Sixteen years later, Zach is thunderstruck when Parley stands on the front doorstep of his house—the house that had been their refuge, which Zach restored. But Parley isn’t alone, and Zach wonders if he’s found Parley only to lose him a second time. If they can overcome the terrors of the past and the situation of the present, maybe they can build a new relationship just as Zach rebuilt the house—brick by brick.

What's Up Wednesdays #003.

More about What's Up Wednesdays here.

WHAT I'M READING.

Nearly half way through The Genome by Sergey Lukyanenko, finally! I had books from the library so I kept putting this back until those were read. Anyhoo, I think Lukyanenko is the bees knees when it comes to urban fantasy/paranormal, his Night Watch series are up there in my top ten all time favourite books. So when I got a notif from Amazon that there was now an English translation of The Genome, that was the one I bought with a gift certificate at Christmas.

I only have one problem with this one: the translation isn't as good as it is for the NW books. But having said that, this is terrific book. It's hard sci-fi but doesn't have so much sci-fi!science that my brain wants to melt; in fact, I actually understand what's going on, so I count that as a big win. For another thing, it's very obvious that Lukyanenko likes to poke the bear that is the Russian government (he's Kazak and lives/writes in Russia/Russian.), so his main characters in this book are a black woman who is a doctor, an executioner and a linguist; a gay man who is the best at what he does in the sector; a teenage girl who has been genetically altered to be an assassin; a Frenchman who has an uncanny ability with weaponary; and the captain, also genetically altered to be a specialist pilot. The captain, the teenage girl and the co-pilot are all Russian. There are issues of prejudice between the crew and their new passengers, while the crew themselves meld together into a tight knit unit akin to a family. Who just happen to be on board a discus shaped space ship with high tech weapons and internals.

It's fast paced, it's interesting, it's got me gripped. The characters are all awesome, especially Janet, the black woman, who is a tough, strong, no-nonsense character who also is the most empathic, alongside Alex, the captain. Actually, I like all the characters so far, but I bet that'll change! In short, another fantastic book from Lukyanenko, and I hope there's more English translations of his work done soon.

WHAT I'M WRITING (+ A WRITING GOAL).

Promo things for my new release, A Shot in the Dark, which is available in eBook and paperback.

I've done a bit more on the paranormal, but that's going slowly right now as suddenly, things have happened, much earlier than I expected and I'm suddenly running around like a chook with its head chopped off. (Read: VERY busy). Also have made a start of fixing up and synopsising the sci-fi, but that's also slow going because of aforementioned running around.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

Sleep. Ye gods and little fishes, sleep is so marvellous and wonderful and my bed is awesome and it must never leave me. Also, reading helps jiggle the old brainmeats, which is why we should do it. And because we enjoy it. And I'm so gripped and confused and impressed with the TV series Fortitude, which is confounding, wonderful, horrifying and brilliant. If I could write something that intense and maintain the suspense, not giving anything away, I would be delighted.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW.

More bullet points!

  • Epilepsy diagnosed. That's okay, I'd expected that, but laws regarding driving mean that getting my license has been set back by a few years, so that's annoyed me greatly. Oh well. C'est la vie.

  • My niece's wedding is in 6 weeks and I am so not ready!!

  • Planning a trip to the gorgeous Flinders Ranges for the near future sometime with mum, because she's never been and I'm of the opinion that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. This'll be my fourth trip up there.

  • Fortitude. I cannot get enough of this brilliant show. Stanley Tucci is amazing. The rest of the cast are too.

  • The music of Ólafur Arnalds (he does the soundtrack for Broadchurch) is perfect to write to.

  • The new poster for the next James Bond movie, Spectre, is out and sweet mercy me. Daniel Craig. 'Nuff said.

  • Mum's had a few more falls, which is worrying, but her GP is on the case and I'm hopeful that the new plan will be a good one.

  • L-R: The Spectre poster; our first spring onions, fresh from the garden. They smelled amazing; my new release, A Shot in the Dark; the cat hiding under a stool in the bath... as they do; some of the cast of Fortitude.

"A Shot in the Dark" Release!

A Shot in the Dark is out! You can get it from Dreamspinner Press here: eBook and paperback.

Blurb: Sequel to The Bone Cup
    Archangel Chronicles: Book Seven

    M/M Paranormal, Angels / Demons
    Publisher: DSP Publishing
    Cover Artist: Anne Cain
    Release Date: March 9, 2015
    Length: 210 pages / Novel

After the theft and recovery of the Holy Grail, saving all of creation from destruction, and almost losing Michael, Archangel Gabriel devoutly hopes for nothing more dangerous than a stubbed toe. So when Archangel Michael sends a pack of his Venatores and two of Gabriel’s trackers on a rescue mission, Gabriel believes it’s purely routine.

No one is prepared for the danger and terror the Venatores find. What they face is torture, kidnapping, medical experiments, vivisection, and the enemies’ desire to remove all nonhumans—including shifters—from Earth forever. The supposedly routine rescue mission turns into a struggle for survival, and Gabriel and Michael face a terrifying new foe, and a threat to not just their existence and love but to the existence of everything they know. If the Brotherhood of Archangels and their allies can’t prevail, all will be lost.
