It's a hot day here in Adelaide. That's okay though, as my latest book and first release for 2016 is out today! Song of Song is out with Dreamspinner Press (it's the 18th here, so it counts, even though it won't be the 18th in the US until tomorrow here) and you can get it here in your choice of ebook or paperback.

And that's not all that's happening today. My niece is having her baby, her fourth child! She's gone into hospital with her husband and the whole family are waiting by our phones to hear if she has a boy or a girl. I'm about to be a great-aunt... again!

WHAT I'M READING.

I'm 3/4 of the way through Red Phoenix by Kylie Chan. I really liked the first book in this series, White Tiger, but I find the MFC incredibly annoying and I frequently want to apologise to readers and say that not all Australians are like this. That's usually when I put the book down for a while. When I pick it up again, I enjoy it until once more, MFC with her magical perfect perfection that astounds even gods and goddesses that she insults and shouts at like unruly children, makes me want to hurl it at the wall. So I have a love/hate relationship with this series. Love, because all the secondary characters and the villains are fabulous and modern Hong Kong is beautifully written, but hate because of the MFC. And now there's all these hints the size of anvils that MFC is going to end up being part or entirely goddess of an ancient culture, and that goddess form will be a serpent. I'm not laying bets on how "astonishing" everyone else in the book will find this, because I don't like losing money.

But other than that, I'm enjoying it!

WHAT I'M WRITING (+ A WRITING GOAL).

Nearly finished the vampire novel that I started writing for NaNoWriMo, but I'm not sure I'm going to go on and finish it with a gazillion edits and chops and changes or not because I'm not entirely convinced it's not crap, so there's that.

Still working with Cate Ashwood on our second collaboration, set in Australia.

Song of Song will be out on the 18th January 2016 and Book, Line and Sinker will be out in March/April 2016, both with Dreamspinner Press.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

Sleep. Quiet. The sound of rain on the roof. The internet not being down, because it's hard to research something when your ISP suddenly drops out. My cat cuddling up beside me. <-- Same as last time.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW.

I've had the first batch of work done for the exhibition I'm involved with for next year's Fringe. The Fringe runs through February and March. So John and I have been driving around and I've been taking a million photos. I'm lucky to have a brother who doesn't mind driving me hither and yon for this. We ended up in the town of Sedan a few weeks ago, Sedan is 110km north-east from Adelaide and is tiny, but for me as a photographer, it was a gold mine.

And the year's coming to an end, it's gone by so quickly! It'll be Christmas in 23 days, argh!

1. Ruin on the way to Myponga Beach, some 80kms south of Adelaide. 2. The beautiful 18 meter tall statue of Kwan Yin at the Nan Hai Pu Tuo Buddhist temple in Sellicks Hill, also down the south coast of SA. 3.Ruins of Arthur's Seat in the Adelaide Hills. 4. The center of town in Sedan, 110km north-east of Adelaide. 5. Castiel. Because he's adorable.

Brick by Brick co-authored with Cate Ashwood has won an Honorable Mention in its area of best gay contemporary romance in the 2015 Rainbow Awards. Thank you so much!

The comments for this one are so lovely, again, thank you. "This story is like the most delicious dessert for the brain! How beautifully written it was and what a great romance between these two so likeable men! This is for sure a well deserved ten across the board. Nothing less will do for this beautiful story. It's such a delight when one comes across a story so well written, a story that wraps you up in the softest wool cotton keeping you warm way after 'The End'. More stories like this one need to come out. So, I suggest to these two wonderful Authors to Get Going! I Want More!!!"

And don't worry, we two authors are working on more stuff together. :D

Mythica, my paranormal novel out with Bottom Drawer Publications has recieved an Honorable Mention in its area of best gay paranormal romance in this year's Rainbow Awards.

The comments for this novel made me smile: "This story was so nice and easy to read. What really kept me into it, outside of being a good read, was the mention of several cities in Australia that I was somewhat familiar with because of my author friends who live there." Thank you so much and I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

The Feast Festival is South Australia's GLBTIQ festival, celebrating all elements of diversity in SA. The festival began in 1997 and has grown in size and popularity with each year and this year is no different. If you're in Adelaide this year, the festival kicks off on the 14th November and the final day is the 29th. There's lots to do during the festival so there's bound to be something for everyone. And to whet the appetite, here's a terrific promo video.

So what can you expect this year? Quite a lot. Some of the guests and events include the Pride March, which kicks off at Victoria Square at 5:30pm on the 14th, an evening with Conchita Wurst, Stephen Fry in Adelaide, Australia's Homosexual Histories Conference, Hiroto Simizu lecture, art, film, music, dance, parties, lectures, talks, cabaret, comedy, and more. There's events for youth-aged people and for retirees, including the SA Samesex Dancesport Competition. There is also a Transgender Dinner and the International Day of Transgender Remembrance evenings, and sessions featuring sexual and gender diversity within Indigenous Australians.

From the festival's site, what this year's Feast is about:

The 2015 Feast Festival promises to be an exciting fortnight of entertainment and a spirited celebration of - and by - the LGBTIQ community.

This year's theme - "Come as you are", is about being welcome, being yourself and feeling comfortable, safe and supported through a rich and diverse Arts Festival.

We hope that you will join us - and Feast Ambassador Conchita Wurst – at this year’s festival!

Part of the festival this year is the lounge, which has a library. Dreamspinner Press has donated books to this library, as have a group of Adelaide authors and other members of the community, particularly Tim Harkness, who in my humble opinion has been awesome about the entire thing. The lounge opening is at 5pm on the 17th November, where there will be books to peruse and wine to drink. It's at the Lion Arts Center courtyard on the corner of North Terrace and Morphett Street. Myself and fellow author and all round nice person L. V. Lloyd will be there too!

Check out what's on at Feast by visiting the site, where you can download a copy of the festival guide.

It's out. Today is the release day for the last book in the series of The Archangel Chronicles. Will everyone get their happily ever afters? Only way to find out is to read the book! You can get it now at Dreamspinner Press, ebook and paperback. It's been an incredible ride and I've enjoyed every moment. Once again, my thanks and love to readers, betas, editors, artists, and all at Dreamspinner. <3

And now to the next story. :)
misslj_author: (Theme - m/m erotica)

The final book in the Archangel Chronicles will be released on the 2nd. It's available for preorder now on the Dreamspinner site, but it is indeed the last one.

I have been so incredibly lucky to be able to write this seriews and have it find its home with DSP. I began them wanting to write about Archangels and Archdemons and how the two ancient enemies would interact in crisis that were bigger than their animosities. I also wanted to develop romantic relationships within that framework, and the main one is that of Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Theirs is a love that is essentially "friends to lovers." I'm sure many--if not all--of us have had a crush on someone and kept it as quiet as possible for various reasons, and in Michael's case it's purely a lack of self-confidence. He doesn't feel that the dashing, handsome, outgoing Gabriel would have any interest in him at all. He hides it so well, so deep within himself that it's kept buried for centuries. Michael is shy and retiring, keeping himself separate from the rest of the Brotherhood and so it isn't until a meeting of all of the Archangels that Gabriel catches his attention and is drawn to Michael more than ever before. A slow and gentle courtship begins as the two open up more and more to each other, their relationship and their love growing.

Of course, nothing is ever easy and there is always some plotting or misdeeds that interfere with the path of true love.

Now, with nine books in the series, everything is over and with a happy end for everyone--except the bad guys.

I hope everyone has been with these characters since the first book will enjoy the last and I hope that new readers of the series will enjoy it just as much.

Thank you to all my readers, past, present and future; to Elizabeth and DSP for publishing the series; to Cate and Meredith for beta'ing; to Ericka, Lynn, Ian and the editing staff; Anne for the amazing covers. <3 <3 <3

We're near the end, dear friends, the end. The last book of The Archangel Chronicles will be out on the 2nd October, and to celebrate its release and the end of the series, I'm doing a series of posts here to commemorate that. So first up, a playlist. This is music I listened to while I was writing, music that I thought fit the characters or the scenes or the tone of things. It's an eccelctic variety, and I hope you enjoy some--if not all--of it.

Oops, I only just remembered it's Wednesday. That's what having a long weekend with the public holiday on a Monday does to you. Or maybe what it does to me. Anyhoodle, it's another What's Up Wednesday and here we go!

WHAT I'M READING.

I'm 1/4 of the way through Dark Lover, the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward. So far, I'm enjoying it. I like Ward's ideas about vampire mythology and how the world of the vampire and the hunter has been constructed as a parallel to the human world. I also quite like that these vampires aren't kept alive by human blood, but by blood of their own kind. A clever little twist. The MFC is Beth and she has an adorably written cat named Boo. I hope Boo lives to tell the tale because I love it when pets are part of a story and I'm always hopeful they don't get forgotten in the narrative.

I have sadly put aside The Genome by the amazing Sergei Lukyanenko. I was half way through it but there was a lot that I didn't enjoy about it and every time I looked at it to finish it, I just didn't want to. So for now it's a DNF. I might go back to it at a later date, we'll see. It makes me sad because he is SUCH an incredible writer, and this is his first translated to English novel outside the Night Watch series.

WHAT I'M WRITING (+ A WRITING GOAL).

I am 51% (according to my stats on Write Track) into Book, Line and Sinker. My goal is to finish it by the end of June or the early days of July. That's a bit fluid because a lot depends on my medication. More on that below.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

Sleep. Quiet. The sound of rain on the roof. The internet not being down, because it's hard to research something when your ISP suddenly drops out. My cat cuddling up beside me. <-- Same as last week!

WHAT ELSE IS NEW.

I have started medication for epilepsy. They are walloping me about a bit, due to adjusting to them and the side effects. I hope that it all evens out soon, but for now, I'm just very tired and worn out, and wishing it would all stop.

It's winter here now, and it's freezing. Insofar as this is Australia and our winter is pretty mild compared to the Northern Hemisphere, it's colder than usual and drier than normal. Though there's been some heavy rain, it hasn't been as much as last year, and the cloud cover is less, meaning that it is really bloody cold! I love winter, but I'm not a fan of freezing!

I think I mentioned all this last week. Well, I've also been out and about a bit with my brother and my mum, taking photos on the new camera I have, and oh I love this thing, I love it so much. It's so shiny and spiffy and it has a huuuuuuuuuge zoom lense and an anti-shaking setting, which is awesome as I do shake a bit now. So yay for that!

And now it's time for Would I Lie to You? which is the most hilarious show ever. It's all good.

L-R: The sea at Semaphore beach; My brother's truck all loaded up; Things you don't see every day--a truck carrying a train; The beautiful building that is the Largs Pier Hotel; The fort of Fort Largs which is a heritage site.
misslj_author: (Pharoah Sexypants)
So I know the 'official' What's Up Wednesday is over with now, but it's a good idea and so I'm going to try to keep doing it here on my LJ. How frequently I do this remains to be seen, though!

WHAT I'M READING.

I've just finished Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed and it was fantastic. A great fantasty novel, with the ending open enough for a sequel yet closed enough that it's not necessary. I like books like that. I'm hoping to start J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series soon.

WHAT I'M WRITING (+ A WRITING GOAL).

Still at work on Book, Line and Sinker and I'm hoping to get that finished really soon.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

Sleep. Quiet. The sound of rain on the roof. The internet not being down, because it's hard to research something when your ISP suddenly drops out. My cat cuddling up beside me.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW.

I've started new medication to treat my epilepsy. The side effects are annoying and I still feel like my brain is full of cotton wool, so that's bugging me a bit. I hope that this will all settle down soon, as I am not enjoying the adjustment period at all. My brother has moved down here and is all settled in and happy, our niece's wedding went off without a hitch and winter is here, so it's very cold! I have a book out at the end of June, cowritten with Cate Ashwood, called Brick by Brick.

I have a new release out today! A Fire in the Heart, book eight of The Archangel Chronicles is out now!

L-R: 1. Cas slumbering away. 2. Medieval colouring book and pencils! 3. Wedding cake made by my niece for her wedding. She's so talented. 4. Readers reading my books! 5. My brother and myself.

For this Hop Against Homophobia and Transphobia, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (17th May), I thought I would write about something a little different.

2015Png

There is so much badness in the world overall, that sometimes it seems to be almost overwhelming. Good things leap out like rare diamonds or rays of sunlight in an otherwise murky political environment, an environment charged with anger, fear and distrust.

So I was delighted to discover that in the Australian state of Victoria, there is a retirement village being built to cater for the LGBT community.

The community is called Linton Estate and is situated a short distance from the town of Ballan, which is about an hour's drive from the city of Melbourne, and between the towns of Geelong and Ballarat. This gives it the almost perfect location of being close to all that a city has to offer while being in a rural location. Indeed, the area is picturesque and Ballan itself is home to a vintage vehicle and machinery rally held in February which is apparently well-known for its tractor pull; an Autumn festival; a mineral spring and to the south of the town are the Brisbane Ranges and the You Yangs National Park.

800px-BallanMechanicsInstituteMATTINBGNcc30
cc3.0 Mattinbgn :: The Mechanics Institute, one of the many beautiful buildings in Ballan.

The Linton Estate is the brainchild of Peter Dickson, who came up with the idea while enjoying a glass of wine with some friends. The conversation took place nearly thirty years ago, and part of it included the very real prospect of growing old and being able to retire comfortably with peers and carers.
The site of the Estate is located at 483 Old Melbourne Road, Ballan, and is currently vacant land, with blocks being sold to interested parties who are LGBTI. The developers who will be constructing housing and other community buildings are Cavalier Homes and the agent managing the properties is Stockdale and Leggo's Projects.

The finished estate will have, along with residential houses and other amenities, an indoor heated spa, a café, a bar, a croquet lawn, library, tennis courts and more. All in all, it is a beautiful idea in a beautiful location. From The Guardian:

Linton Estate will offer six-star resort facilities including a gym, 32-metre pool, wet and dry sauna, bar, restaurant and library. It has a focus on environmental sustainability, with solar street lighting and grey water systems. Prices start at about $400,000, although Dickson hopes to add a one-bedroom option at about $300,000. (http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/apr/24/retirement-homes-for-the-lgbt-community-go-from-dream-to-reality)

Peter Dickson says of the estate, "At a dinner party 28 years ago we talked about what we were going to do when we get old. We talked about being surrounded by friends and not being alone and isolated and forgotten about.

"They [LGBTI people] were born in the closet and come out of the closet and then go back into the closet due to fear of being picked on and isolation from each other. People that are not under the GLBTI community don’t actually know how discrimination happens to people or how much they are made uncomfortable. Places where they can’t hold hands or embrace or care for each other or dress without comment."

The Stonewall Foundation in the UK has done a study and determined that LGBTI will be almost twice as much more likely to rely of support services as they age and more likely to struggle to find providers who understand the needs and concerns they have as they age. They are also more likely to live alone and also according to the study, there is a higher rate of alcohol related problems, depression and anxiety illnesses as well. The full study makes for sobering reading and can be accessed here. http://www.stonewall.org.uk/documents/lgb_in_later_life_final.pdf

GLBTI activist and academic, Rodney Coombe said of the Linton Estate project and LGBTI aging, "For some LGBTI people a specific aged care facility is the solution to the prejudice that can still be found in the aged care sector. But for the vast majority of LGBT seniors--those who want to live near family and longtime friends--the solution is better policies and more awareness training in existing facilities."

Dickson acknowledges that the estate may not be affordable to all LGBTI aging persons, but it is his hope that this estate will be the first of many and help stem the invisibility that so many aging LGBTI people feel. The project was given the go-ahead in 208 from the local shire council and after delays and some problems, it's ready for people to express their interest and seek to invest in and buy property for their retirement age.

Interest in residing in the estate has come from all over the world, including, Dickson says, Turkey, the USA, the UK and interstate here in Australia. The residents of Ballan have welcomed the development as good news for their area, saying that it will bring more people and therefore more jobs and money into the town, and a more diverse culture which will enrich the lives of the people who live in the area. There has, of course, been some dissent, which has been described as a very small group of religious people protesting the development. Overall, though, as the project progresses and the work continues, the positive reactions greatly outnumber the negative.

This is a wonderful development and I personally hope it will be the first of many such projects for the aged LGBTI community throughout Australia and the world. And if you're interested in taking a look around and seeing what will be on offer for residents, then check out the Property Search page here: https://www.villages.com.au/vic/ballan/linton-estate-1271 and the official Linton Estate page here: http://www.lintonestate.com.au/

More about What's Up Wednesdays here.

(I know it's Thursday here in Australia, but it's still Wednesdays in the Northern Hemisphere, so it's all good.)

So it seems that What's Up Wednesday is over. (Reasons are here). I'm sad about that, as I rather enjoyed them. So this will be my last formal-ish WuW, as I go off and ponder what to do to kick myself in the butt to blog *things* rather than links to new books and cover reveals. Because while those are nice, people don't read blogs just for those things, they read blogs to connect, to learn things, to be entertained--the same reasons people read books, basically. And I don't want to be one of those authors whose blog/social media platform of choice is full of nothing but promo of the me-me-me variety. So. I will endeavour to do more bloggy things, and will search out ways to kick start myself into doing that.

It may well be (I hope) that once my life quietens down in May, I won't need that extra push to blog. Certainly I didn't need that before 2015 began, and this year has been a riot of appointments, disasters, dramas, curveballs and what feels like a million edits! (The edits I like. The edits are educational. Trufax.) I have high hopes for the end of May, beginning of June, so fingers and toes crossed that those hopes aren't crushed beneath the weight of more appointments, disasters, dramas and curveballs. From my fingers to the universe's ears, eh? Anyhoo, let's get on with this last WuW.

WHAT I'M READING.

I've set aside The Genome for the moment to read Synners by Pat Caddigan. I've only read twenty pages so far, but I'm enjoying it! It's cyberpunk, it's great world building, and so far, so good.

WHAT I'M WRITING (+ A WRITING GOAL).

In between edits and other things, I've been working on Book, Line and Sinker, which is a contemporary m/m set in my home state of South Australia, in one of my most favourite places here, Quorn and the Flinders Ranges. I think it's that love of the area that makes writing this such a breeze for me, and such a joy, too. It's been some years since I was last up that way (it's a long way from home!), but I love the area so much and it's stayed with me in mind and heart, even if I can't be there in person. So the book is coming along pretty well so far.

My goal here is to have it finished and sub'd by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

So you know how the last one of these I did, I mentioned sleep? Yeah. Sleep. Sleep is amazing, can I say. Also amazing? Not getting random text messages and calls at stupid o'clock. I'm a big fan of that! A little more seriously though, I wrote a whole lot the other day while having my iPod play my entire collection of Within Temptation tracks/albums, and I managed to get in the zone and stay there for a good long while, long enough to put down 4000 words, so I count that as a win.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW.

My niece's wedding is in 14 days. My brother will be moving down here. I'm having neurology appointment sessions at the end of May. Erm... oh, medications have been altered a little for other issues. Adjusting to that is making me very tired, ngl. Otherwise? Not much is new! Oh! I got a new tattoo, and am planning my third one. I dyed my hair, so now I have no regrowth (that'll change, my hair grows fast!), and I'm brigher red than a traffic light. SO MUCH RED.

And as always, I close out with a little picture slide. Enjoy. Love youse all. xXx.

L-R: Latest weaving project; a bunch of honeyeaters having a party in the birdbath in the back garden. They're so adorable... but LOUD! Me with my redone bright red hair; a view of Saltia in the Flinders Ranges; my tattoo shoes (made by Hot Chocolate) at the tattoo studio.
